University of Portsmouth researchers re-examined every specimen assigned to Liopleurodon ferox, including a near-complete skull, two well-preserved skeletons, and extensive postcranial material. Their reconstruction places maximum length just above eight metres and finds a skull about one quarter of total body length. Larger estimates relied on isolated fragments that cannot confidently be assigned to the species. The revised animal was smaller than its television legend but remained the largest aquatic vertebrate in the Oxford Clay ecosystem.
