"body_text": "An autonomous laboratory is useful only if it can challenge its own conclusions. In this system, large-language-model agents generate and reject research questions, require independent theoretical checks and run experiments designed to distinguish competing predictions. Working with ensembles of quantum spins in diamond, the agents derived the minimum number of calibration settings needed for a defined family of microwave pulse sequences, checked the result computationally and designed a physical test. The first measurement agreed, but repeated reference measurements revealed drift during data collection. Rather than loosen the acceptance rule, the agents marked the run inconclusive, revised the protocol and repeated it; the revised experiment met the criteria and supported the prediction. This is a demonstration on one laboratory problem, not evidence that the system can independently conduct arbitrary science.",
