Summary

A search of 109,545 emitters found eight tentative Population III-like candidates near redshift two.

Researchers searched 109,545 high-confidence HETDEX Lyman-alpha emitters for strong narrow helium emission without detected ultraviolet metal lines. Eight candidates produced a stacked helium equivalent width of 28.7 ± 6.7 angstroms and no significant nitrogen, carbon or oxygen features at the reported limits. The combination is difficult to reproduce with several enriched-star, active-galaxy and shock alternatives. The authors call them very metal-poor or Population III-like candidates; deeper individual ultraviolet and optical spectra are required for confirmation.
