The source briefly outshone its host galaxy in ultraviolet light, and the team placed the roughly million-solar-mass black hole more than 30,000 light-years from the galactic center. The July 27 Astrophysical Journal Letters report validates tidal disruptions as a way to find otherwise hidden wandering black holes, but one detection does not establish how common they are.

McMaster University researchers estimated that Canada's 2023 wildfires burned 15.1 million hectares and released 554 million tonnes of carbon. Their July 27 Geophysical Research Letters study attributes about 423 million tonnes, or 76 percent, to soil and peat rather than living biomass; peatlands alone supplied roughly one-third of total emissions. The analysis shows why hotter, drier conditions can turn long-lived underground carbon stores into fuel, while its modeled totals carry uncertainty and do not make every Canadian fire a peat fire.

Films assembled from cadmium-based magic-size clusters showed nonreciprocal absorption and emission of linearly polarized light without an external magnetic field or elaborate metamaterial. French researchers used Raman microspectrometry and hyperspectral imaging to find charcoal distributed through two black figures in Font-de-Gaume cave. Tiny authorized samples dated the bison to roughly 13,461-13,162 calibrated years before present, while three sections of the mask fell into widely separated ranges, suggesting repeated episodes of work. The PNAS method may make other supposedly undatable black cave art accessible, although the dates apply to sampled pigment rather than every image in the cave.

Researchers at Science Tokyo, Tohoku University and Nagoya Institute of Technology tracked reflectance immediately after a metal-organic framework absorbed light. Experiment and theory indicate that a short-lived bond-order wave, with alternating stronger and weaker electronic bonding, forms before atomic shifts establish a potentially polar hidden state within about 30 femtoseconds. The July 22 Physical Review Letters result reveals an intermediate step and a way to study light-controlled materials, not a ready high-speed device.

University of Toyama researchers deposited a 50-nanometer rubrene layer, seeded crystals with one heating step and grew them after the remaining layers were added. Researchers reviewed 18 trials involving 1,368 people with hip osteoarthritis. Compared with usual care or no treatment, exercise lowered pain by about seven points on a 100-point scale, below the roughly 12-point threshold often used for a noticeable change, and produced similarly small average functional gains. Researchers at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca collected two weeks of reports from 287 adults and used natural-language processing to compare dreams with waking experiences and personal characteristics. The Communications Psychology study found that dream content was neither a simple daily replay nor random noise: mind-wandering, sleep quality, personality and the COVID-19 period all shaped how reports were organized and felt. University of British Columbia researchers used bottom-mounted sonar, micro-CT and pressure chambers to study Chaoborus edulis larvae that descend into Lake Malawi's low-oxygen depths by day and rise to feed at night. Two pairs of air sacs change volume as pH alters elastic resilin in their walls, and the sacs withstood pressure equivalent to more than 400 meters. The mechanism challenges pressure alone as an explanation for insects' absence from the open ocean, without resolving salinity, ecology and other barriers.
