The Galaxy Halo May Hide Most of Its Thermal Energy
Joint X-ray and SZ measurements imply a faint second phase around NGC 4594, but alternatives remain open.
Summary
Joint X-ray and SZ measurements imply a faint second phase around NGC 4594, but alternatives remain open.
The first spatially resolved joint X-ray and Sunyaev–Zel'dovich analysis of a massive isolated disk galaxy found more inner-halo pressure than the X-ray-derived gas predicts. A two-phase interpretation gives the X-ray-bright component a filling factor of roughly 0.004–0.006 near 50 kiloparsecs, with baryon mass underestimated about 2.5× and thermal energy by roughly an order of magnitude. A nonthermal contribution has not been excluded.
